Picking The Right Keyword

Time and time again I get emails from people asking why their campaigns are going nowhere and nine times out of ten it comes down to the keyword or lack of keyword research. Affiliate marketing and article marketing are not new and there are people who have been doing it from the very beginning and their are companies who have paid millions of dollars to basically own certain keywords. Remember when domain names were the big thing and companies were paying millions of dollars for names like business.com or money.com? Even back at the infancy keywords met dollars. Now you need to use keywords in your anchor text on a ton of different articles and websites in order to gain ground and in some cases there is just no point. Keyword research comes down to two main factors (A) What people are looking for (B) How strong is your competition.

The first one is pretty obvious for there is no sense trying to promote a product that no one wants. Sure you may top Google with the keyword but what is the point if no one clicks on the link. The second criteria is basically going to tell you whether it is going to be a walk in the park or a pure butt kicking. Certain keywords have so much competition it is just not worth the bother, lose weight for instance has 48,000,000 million pages competing but if you search for lose weight for new years in quoted text you are down to around 1000 pages. So which makes more senses competing against 48 million or a thousand pages? This is why keyword research is so essential and having the right keyword tool will make or break the affiliate marketer.
